Obituary

Thomas "Tom" A. Andersen, 70, of Indiana, passed away Sunday, December 29, 2013 at Indiana Regional Medical Center. He was born in 1943 to Hans and Eleanor (Knipp) Andersen in Dearborn, MI. Tom was a history and sociology educator, teaching at the elementary, secondary and college levels. He retired from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2008. Tom graduated from Eastern Michigan University where he received his Bachelor and Masters degrees. He received his PhD from Michigan State University in 2001. He lived 56 years in Michigan and moved to New Orleans in 1999; after surviving Hurricane Katrina he and his wife moved to Indiana. Tom was an avid sailor, billiards player and outdoorsman. Tom enjoyed studying current events, world history and environmental science. He is survived by his wife and companion of 25 years Valerie J. Gunter, Indiana; close cousin Sandy Kegler and husband Doug, MI; mother-in-law Ella Olson, OK; father-in-law Bobby Gunter, AR; brother-in-law Joel B. Gunter and wife Theresa, OH; sister-in-law Lauren G. Brooks and husband Greg Conway, TX; special friends Robert Shaw and wife Jenny, MI; and Brigid Kilpatrick, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2-4 PM at the Bowser-Minich Funeral Home, Indiana.
