Thelma R. Baker's Obituary

Thelma R. Baker, age 95, of Indiana, died Friday, April 16, 2010. She was born on December 28, 1914 in St. Clairsville, Bedford Co., to W. Clarence and Clara (Oldham) Weyant. Thelma was a 1931 graduate of Cresson High School. She earned a teaching certificate and later a bachelor's degree in Education from Indiana State Teachers College. She taught various elementary grades at Central Cambria School District in Ebensburg for over 30 years. After retirement, she tutored students at Mt. Aloysius College in Cresson. She was a member of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees. Thelma married Samuel S. Baker in 1942. They lived in Portland, OR and in San Francisco, CA during WW II, prior to his service overseas. After the war, they returned to Cresson. She was a long-time member of the Cresson United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School. In recent years she attended the Indiana Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, where she enjoyed participating in Bible Study. During her retirement years, Thelma travelled extensively and kept scrapbooks of her trips. She enjoyed reading, eating out, and attending concerts and plays. She loved spending time with her family and was a very proud mother and grandmother. In addition to her parents, Thelma was preceded in death by her husband Samuel in 1970, her sister Erlamond (Weyant) Conrad, and her brother William C. Weyant. She is survived by her children, Samuel S. Baker, Jr., Raleigh, NC; Sandra J. Baker and husband John A. Roudebush, Indiana; Richard M. Baker and wife Michele, (Licciardello), Butler, three grandchildren, Stefanie J. Baker, Pittsburgh; Logan S. and Cory R. Baker, who are students at the University of Pittsburgh. She is also survived by a step granddaughter, Angela (Roudebush) Petroff and two step great-grandchildren, Alec M. and Adriana R. Petroff all of Indiana. Friends will be received on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. at the Bowser-Minich Funeral Home, Indiana, where a funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 A.M. with Pastor William Murphy officiating. Interment will be made in the Logan Valley Cemetery, Bellwood, PA. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cresson United Methodist Church, 619 5th St., PO Box 192, Cresson, PA 16630, or to the Indiana Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, 2510 Warren Rd., Indiana, PA 15701.
