Obituary

Ruth E. Hogan, 90, passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at Moorehead House, Indiana, PA, where she was a resident for the past two years. She previously resided in her home on Rustic Lodge Road, Indiana, PA, after living in Regent Square in the Pittsburgh area for nearly twenty-five years. She was born on February 17, 1922, in Punxsutawney, PA, the daughter of the late Wallace C. and Jean (Brown) Wolfe. She was married to Donald G. Hogan for 58 years, who preceded her in death on December 3, 2003. They were married on June 17, 1945 at the Oakland Avenue United Methodist Church in Punxsutawney, PA. During their married life, they lived in Westerville, OH; Punxsutawney, PA; Providence, RI; and Pittsburgh and Indiana, PA. Mrs. Hogan was a graduate of Punxsutawney High School class of 1939. She graduated from Otterbein College, Westerville, OH, in 1943 where she worked part-time as a secretary in the college office. After graduating, she taught school in Louisville, OH from 1943-1945. From 1964 until her retirement in 1977, she taught English at Dickson Junior High School for the Swissvale school district. Mrs. Hogan had previously done substitute teaching from 1959 until 1964 in the Swissvale school district. Mrs. Hogan was a long time member of Grace United Methodist Church in Indiana, where she was very active until her last few declining years. She taught children's Sunday School, along with being a member of the Mary's Circle, Bible Study, and the Jamison Sunday School class and assisted with Vacation Bible School. She was active in the United Methodist Church her entire life wherever she lived. She was a lifetime member of the Punxsutawney Historical and Genealogy Society. She and her husband traveled extensively in the United States, and also traveled to Canada, England, Scotland, Israel, Greece and Egypt. Previously, they spent their winters on Hutchinson Island in Florida. Mrs. Hogan enjoyed cooking, baking, reading, playing the piano and organ, crocheting, knitting and caring for her family. Surviving relatives include her three children: son William Hogan and wife, Lonna, of Southport, NC; daughters Nancy Anderson and husband James of Punxsutawney, PA; and Ann Hamrock and husband Joseph (Jan), of Lake Frederick, VA; grandchildren Jennifer Cohen, Kris Anderson, Eric Hamrock, and Jodie Hewitt; great grandchildren Sara Hancock and Jesse Wheeler, Macie Hewitt, Joseph Hamrock and great great grandchildren Scarlet and Suellen Wheeler. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother Robert C. Wolfe, infant brother Billy Wolfe and granddaughter Kimberly Anderson. Mrs. Hogan was the last remaining member of her family. Friends will be received on Friday, June 15, 2012, from 6-8 P.M. at the Bowser-Minich Funeral Home, Indiana. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, June 16, 2012, at 2 P.M. with Pastor Kathy Mihoerck officiating. Interment will follow at the Circle Hill Cemetery, Punxsutawney, PA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mrs. Hogan's name to the Indiana Free Library, 845 Philadelphia Street, Indiana, PA 15701.
