Obituary

Dr.Robert "Doc" Millard Raemore, 71, of Indiana, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 9, 2013, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born in 1941 to Robert E. and Marcella A. (Smith) Raemore, in Philadelphia. Robert spent his early years on a farm in Linden, PA and attended Level Corners one-room school house before moving to Williamsport, PA during his second-grade year. He was a 1958 graduate of Williamsport High School (WHS). He played football for WHS and was a standout track and field athlete with the following achievements: PIAA state track and field champion in the mile relay, breaking the state record (1956); placed third in the 220 yard dash at the PIAA state meet (1956); PIAA state champion in the 100 and 220 yard dash, placing third in the 440 yard dash (1957); PIAA state champion in the 100, 220 and 440 yard dash, breaking the state record in the 440 (1958); Penn Relays Championship of America High School 440 relay champion (1958); Penn Relays Central Penn Conference mile relay champion (1956-1958); and attended nine District Four championships (1956-1958). Robert went on to attend Villanova University where he attained a bachelor's degree in Natural Science. Specifically recruited to run for the Villanova track and field team, he achieved the following honors: AAU National Champion in the Indoor Sprint Medley (1959); Penn Relays Championship of America Freshman Mile Relay champion (1959); the Penn Relays Championship of America Mile Relay champion (1960 and 1961); the Penn Relays Championship of America 880 relay champion (1961 and 1962); and part of five-time indoor and outdoor IC4A team champions (1960-1962). Robert was a 1967 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. From 1967-1970, Robert served as captain in the U.S. Army Europe Dental Corps' 123rd Medical Detachment. He was a graduate of the U.S. Army Field Service School and was awarded the U.S. Army Europe Award for Dedication. He practiced dentistry for 47 years. From 1971-1980, Robert was a solo-practicing dentist in Indiana, PA, and then formed a dental partnership with Dr. Dennis Brumbaugh, also in Indiana, PA. He was a graduate of the Las Vegas Institute of Advanced Restorative Dentistry. From 1973-1980, Robert was the assistant track and field coach at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, from 1980-1984 served as the head track and field coach at IUP and then returned to his post of assistant coach from 1984 until his coaching retirement in 2008. During his coaching tenure, Robert coached three national-champion sprinters, several All-Americans, numerous Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference champions and even one future Olympian. The 1977 All-American Mile Relay team that he coached still holds the PSAC all-time best record. Robert was inducted into the West Branch Valley Sports Hall of Fame, the PIAA Track and Field Hall of Fame and was named Division II Eastern Regional and National Assistant Track Coach of the Year. Robert had a zest for life. He was an avid reader and philosopher who had a thirst for knowledge and understanding. He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, nature, fishing and playing his guitar. With his knowledge of the science of cooking, he was frequently known to whip up amazing meals without even a recipe. He loved his two daughters dearly and absolutely adored his three grandchildren. His smile was infectious and his laugh unforgettable. He will forever be missed by his family, friends, legions of dental patients, as well as numerous athletes whose lives he so deeply touched. Robert is survived by his wife of 49 years, Shirley J. Raemore, Indiana; two daughters, Allison S. Peiritsch and husband Brian, Pittsburgh; Emily E. Rosenbaum and husband Michael, Cleveland, OH; three grandchildren, who he absolutely adored and cherished: Ian C. Costello, Anna E. and Katherine A. Rosenbaum; three brothers, George M. and wife Barbara D., Danbury, CT; Jon S. and wife Debra L., Harrisburg; David N. and wife Karen M., Williamsport; and nieces and nephews, Michael and Michelle Raemore, Charlotte, NC and Aaron and Lauren Raemore, Williamsport, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be on Thursday from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 PM at the Bowser-Minich Funeral Home, Indiana. A funeral service will be held on Friday at 10:00 AM at the funeral home with the Pastor Dennis Marshall officiating. A private burial will be held following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Robert's name to the Salvation Army.
