Robert Frank Nuss, Sr.'s Obituary

Robert Frank Nuss Sr., age 96, of North Cape May passed away peacefully on Friday, February 5, 2016 after a brief illness at Cape Regional Medical Center of Cape May Court House, NJ.

He was born in 1919 in Elmira, NY to Frank Nuss and Bertha Blend. When Bob was 1 ½ years old, he and his mother moved to Elmira, NY to live with his maternal grandparents Steve and Rachel Blend. Bertha married Frank Barton when Bob was 5 years old and they established a home on Cherry Street in Athens, PA.

Bob was a member of Fundamental Baptist Church, Indiana, PA.

Bob joined the Army Medical Department in 1940 and served for the duration including seven months in European Theater Operations with the medical department of the 412th armored field artillery. He returned home in 1945 and moved to Indiana in 1957 where he worked for Sears Roebuck, and then Montgomery Warda as a shipping and receiving manager. He later worked for Strouse Aeronautical Services at Jimmy Stewart Airport. In his retirement, he spent many hours on the road moving cars between automobile dealers. In his final years, he lived in North Cape May, NJ.

He is survived by his stepchildren - Betty Jobe from Indiana; Dr. TJ Layton from Marietta, GA; and his stepdaughter-in-law Grace Layton from Erie, PA,;eight step-grandchildren, eleven step-great grandchildren, and eleven step-great great grandchildren, and two step-sisters-in-law.

He is predeceased by his sister - Vera Davey. Bob married Claretta Smith in 1942 at the Walter Reed Hospital where he was stationed for special training. She predeceased him in 1969. He is survived by their children - Julie from Ashley, OH, Robert Jr. from Cape Cod, MA; James Sr. from North Cape May, NJ; and daughters-in-law - Lois and Judy. He also leaves seven grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and sister-in-law Helen Trough of Kingman, AZ.

Bob is also predeceased by his second wife, Nora Layton, and his stepson Howard.

A viewing will be held on February 11, 2016, from 2 to 3 PM at the Bowser-Minich Funeral Home, Indiana, followed by the funeral service at 3:00 PM with Pastor Stanford Webb officiating. Interment will be made in Greenwood Cemetery, Indiana.
