Muriel Smith Hostetler's Obituary

Muriel Smith Hostetler, age 94, of Clymer, died Saturday, May 15, 2010 at Communities of Indian Haven. Born in 1916 in Garmantown, she was the daughter of Gomer J. and Zelma Jane "Jennie" Hull Smith. Mrs. Hostetler attended Pine Twp. High School and later received her Bachelors degree from Indiana State Teachers College, (now IUP), and her Masters degree from Michigan State University. She did further graduate studies at Penn State University. Her teaching career began at Alverda School in 1935. After her marriage to Cloyd Hostetler in 1940, she taught seven years at Scalp Level School, Somerset Co., and later 20 years in the Richland Twp. Schools in Cambria Co. She retired in 1975 after 33 years of teaching. She also served as a part time instructor at the Altoona Campus of Penn State University for about seven years. She was active in Pennsylvania and Indiana County Retired Teachers and Delta Kappa Gamma. Mrs. Hostetler was an active member of the Scalp Level Church of the Brethren for 40 years and has been a member of the Penn Run Church of the Brethren in recent years. She served as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society for more than 10 years. Membership in other organizations included the Indiana Chapter #299 Order of Eastern Star; Order of Amaranth, Court #123 Indiana; Indiana Co. Society of Farm Women; and Hope Grange. Muriel is survived by two daughters and one son, Betty Horn and husband W. Dennis, Clymer; Audean Bryan and husband Dennis, Middletown; Stanley Johns and wife Sandy, Tucson, AZ; six grandchildren, Stephen Horn and wife Amy, Reading; J.T. Horn and wife Melissa, Clymer; Timothy and Daniel Bryan, Middletown; Lisa Johns, Brooklyn, NY; and Erin Pringle and husband Paul, Lacey, WA. She is also survived by six great grandchildren; Kimberly, Laura, Jonny, and Garrett Horn, Reading; Bailey and AnnaMarie Horn, Clymer. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her beloved husband of 37 years, Cloyd, who died in 1977. Friends will be received on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. at the Bowser-Minich Funeral Home, Indiana. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 A.M. at the Penn Run Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Jeff Fackler officiating. Interment will be made in the Richland Cemetery, Johnstown, at 2:30 P.M. Memorial contributions may be made to the Penn Run Church of the Brethren, Penn Run, PA 15765.
