Morton M. Morris' Obituary

Morton M. Morris died on April 10th, 2010 at St. Andrews Village in Indiana. He was 89 years old. Morton was born on March 9th, 1921 to Jack and Jenny Morris of New York City. Upon high school graduation he attended the City College of New York where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. He then was taken into the army where he served for three years as a medic in the WW II European Theater of Operations. After the war he entered New York University where he earned a Master of Science degree in psychology. Morton received his doctorate in Special Education and Education Administration from Columbia University in 1957. During his student years in New York City Morton was a permanent substitute teacher of the sciences in the New York City public school system. In 1957 he moved to Harrisburg, PA to take the position of supervisor of Special Education for the state, a position he held for 5 years. The family then moved to Westmoreland County where he served for two years as Supervisor of Special Education for that county. In 1964, Dr. Willis Pratt, then president of I.U.P., brought him to Indiana to establish a Department of Special Education and Clinical Services. The four-year sequence of study for the bachelors degree was set up under his guidance as was the later Masters program. Morton was chair of the department for the first ten years, after which he continued to teach graduate courses. In 1987 he retired after 22 years at I.U.P. After retirement he continued to work in his chosen field as a state appointed psychologist, and as a federally appointed vocational expert. He pursued these ends for the next 20 years, retiring finally at nearly 86 years of age. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Abigail Rose Faber, and their daughters, Susan Claire Morris and Claudia Morris Lawrey and husband, Bruce D. Lawrey. A brother, Jesse and his wife, Bernadine live in New York City. Morton has requested that there be no flowers, visitation, nor service. He suggested that any remembrances be sent to St. Andrews Village or to the Indiana County Workshop, on whose Board of Directors he served for much of his time in Indiana. The Bowser-Minich Funeral Home is managing all arrangements. www.bowserminich.com
