Obituary

Michael Handler, 64, of Indiana, died November 29, 2011 at the Indiana Regional Medical Center. Michael was born November 7,1947 to the late Honorable Judge Earl Handler and Phoebe Schenkman Handler. He graduated as valedictorian from Penns Manor High School in 1965. He received his bachelor's degree from Dickinson College in 1969 and continued his education at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law where he was a member of the Law Review and was named to the Order of the Coif. He received his Juris Doctor degree in 1972. Michael returned to Indiana to practice law in 1972. He was passionate about the law and enjoyed a distinguished 37-year long career of service to others. In addition to his private practice, he served as an Assistant Public Defender (1986-1991), Indiana County District Attorney (1991-1995), and Assistant District Attorney (2000-2011). He also served as an Army Reservist for eight years and attained the rank of first lieutenant. Michael is survived by his three children: Marlea Handler and Narissa Handler, both of Pittsburgh, PA and Trent Handler of Atlanta, GA. He is also survived by his brother: Richard Handler of Charlottesville, VA. A private ceremony will be held at Oakland Cemetery. Donations in Michael's memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart and Stroke Association, or to a library of choice. The Bowser-Minich Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
