Margaret "Peg" Wegley died peacefully and in the comfort of her family Monday evening at New Haven Court in Greensburg, Pa. She was 88. Born May 18, 1923, in Carnegie, Pa., Peg earned her high school diploma from St. Luke's Catholic School in Carnegie, then went on to graduate from Duff's Business Institute in Pittsburgh. On Jan. 25, 1945, she married William V. Wegley, and their marriage lasted 62 years, until his death in 2007. For 19 years, Peg served as executive secretary to the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, ultimately retiring from IUP in 1988. She volunteered as a nurse's aide during World War II and, after retirement, with a children's literacy program in Indiana. Her life centered on her family, and she traveled every year for most of her life to visit her son and his family in Reno, Nev. Peg was a longtime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Catholic Daughters of America and St. Bernard's Parish in Indiana, Pa. She is survived by: a son, William R. "Dick" Wegley and his wife, Margie of Sun Valley, Nev.; a daughter, Marcie (Wegley) Stoup and her husband, Ralph Stoup of Greensburg, Pa.; grandchildren Kai Wegley of Sun Valley, Nev.; Lyle Wegley and wife Sonya of Fernley, Nev.; Ben Smith and wife Heather of Fennelton, Pa.; and step-grandchildren Vicki Smith of Reedsville, W.Va., and Shane Smith of Northfield, N.J.; great-grandchildren Shelby Wegley, Victor Wegley, Tiffany Wegley, Zach Wray; Michele Smith and Daniel Smith; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, William; two infant sons; her parents, Leonard and Margaret Siegfried; and four siblings, Charles Siegfried, Richard Siegfried, Catherine Siegfried and Elizabeth Patton. Friends will be received Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Bowser-Minich Funeral Home, Indiana. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 PM Friday at the St. Bernard Catholic Church with Father William Kiel Celebrant. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery, Indiana. In memory of Peg, her dogs Corky and Cocoa, and the many cats she and Bill took in over the years, the family recommends donations to the Indiana County Humane Society, 65 Haven Drive, Indiana, PA 15701. Peg's family also expresses its appreciation and gratitude to the nursing, dietary and other staff members at New Haven Court for their kindness, care and attention, and for the affection she shared with her last four-footed friend, Stella.
