Larry's Obituary

Larry Gordon Rice, 80, of Indiana, PA, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, November 2, 2023.

Larry was born the middle son of three children on June 19, 1943, in Gastonia, NC. He later moved with his family to Cleveland, OH where he would later meet his future wife, Cynthia Hazlett Rice. They married on May 4th, 1968, and shared 55 wonderful years together. During their marriage, they were blessed to welcome their three sons, Erik, Matthew, and Seth Rice. His family meant more to him than anything else in the world and he was unendingly proud of his sons, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Larry worked diligently as a drywall installer in Cleveland to pay for his education at Dyke College in Cleveland, OH, where in 1968 he became the first member of his family to earn a college degree. Shortly after graduation he started what would be a 25-year career with Scott Paper Company as a regional sales representative, a career that brought him to Indiana, PA. He went on to use his business knowledge and entrepreneurial skills to form Tri-Star Promotions, a company named after his three sons and "stars", that supported businesses with their marketing products and needs. The Tri-Star Promotions company was a go-to specifically for businesses using custom foam hands as part of their marketing strategy and he was very proud of his success. In his retirement years, Larry enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Larry held many cherished titles: husband, dad, brother, son, grandfather, friend, and coach. He is fondly remembered throughout the community as "The Voice" of the Penns Manor Comets, a role he enjoyed immensely for nearly 40 years. Sports enthusiasts attending athletic events were likely to hear his animated announcer voice at a variety of sporting events and he loved interacting with the community in this capacity. When Larry wasn't busy supporting a sporting event at Penns Manor, you could find him enjoying platform tennis and long bike rides with his friends that often involved a piece of pie somewhere along the way.

Larry and Cindy were long standing members of Zion Lutheran Church in Indiana. Larry is a former member of the church council and spent many years as an usher.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Jerry (Mary Ruth) Rice, his older brother Chris Rice, his brother-in-law Thomas Schambacher, and perhaps the most difficult loss, his beloved son, Matthew Rice.

In addition to his loving wife Cynthia, Larry is survived by his children Erik (Denise) Rice of Moorseville, NC; Seth (Kristen) Rice of Gibsonia, PA; his daughter-in-law Heather Rice of Atlanta, GA; his grandchildren Jillian Rice, Collin Rice and Quinn Rice; Brad (Samantha) Petrulak and Ami Petrulak; and Hildy Rice; his sister Kay Schambacher of Hurst, TX; his Hazlett "in-laws" who he considered his siblings; his great grandchildren Carol-Leigh Petrulak, William Petrulak and Anna Petrulak; numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

A private viewing and memorial service for Larry was held on November 11th at the Bowser-Minich Funeral Home in Indiana, PA.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Larry's memory to the American Heart Association.
