Julian James Altrogge's Obituary

Julian James "JJ" Altrogge, 95, of Indiana, went home to be with his Savior, Sunday, February 16, 2014 at St. Andrew's Village. He was born in 1918 to Grover and Gertrude (Voss) Altrogge in Waukegan, IL. JJ was an active member of Sovereign Grace Church, Indiana. JJ led Bible studies at several area nursing homes, delivered meals for Meals on Wheels, volunteered for the American Red Cross, served blind and handicapped individuals by providing assistance and rides to various appointments. He was an avid fan of baseball and the St. Louis Cardinals, and a regular bowler at various local lanes. JJ was a seasoned artist, giving art lessons to numerous friends. He will be remembered for having hand painted thousands of personal birthday cards for family and friends. JJ had a great memory and an incredible gift of story telling. JJ was a great husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He personally cared for his wife the last seven years of her life with her battle with Alzheimer's disease. The most important factor in JJ's life was his relationship with Jesus Christ and he wanted to glorify his Name in all he did. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the United States Army in Ireland, France and Germany. He is survived by a son Mark V. Altrogge and wife Kristi, Indiana; two daughters, Jan Knorr and husband Barney, Cranberry; Julie Hofstrom and husband Michael, Tulsa, OK; Eight grandchildren, Six great grandchildren, a sister Rita Spitz and husband Richard, IL; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jonalee W. Altrogge in 2001; a son John K. Altrogge, a brother Robert Altrogge A memorial service will be on Saturday at 10:30 AM at Sovereign Grace Church, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donors choice. The Bowser-Minich Funeral Home, Indiana, are entrusted with the arrangements. www.bowserminich.com
