Joseph F. Mele's Obituary

Joseph Frank Mele, age 94, of Indiana, died Saturday, April 23, 2011 at Beacon Ridge Nursing Home. He was born 1916 in The Bronx, NY to Benedetto and Rosina (LaGravinese) Mele. Joseph was Roman Catholic by faith. In addition to attending public school in the Bronx he also attended Mount Saint Charles Academy in Woonsocket, RI, and Evander Childs High School in the Bronx. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's, and was later self employed as a building contractor and carpenter. He moved to Homer City in 1973 where he continued his trade and worked doing home improvements until his retirement in the 1990's. He enjoyed working with his hands. Although he enjoyed the years he lived in Pennsylvania where he made some very close friends and business associates he remained a New Yorker at heart and was an avid New York Yankees fan. Joseph enjoyed growing garden tomatoes which he planted every year along with many other vegetables. He is survived by a daughter Patricia Mele, Indiana; one sister, Margaret Porricelli, New York, NY; and several nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to his parents and stepmother Concetta Maruzzi, he was preceeded in death by his wife Mary (Rellick) in 2004, whom he married Febuary 6, 1941, an infant daugher, and by his brother Domenick and infant brother Frankie. Friends will be received on Monday from 3 to 7 PM at the Bowser-Minich Funeral Home, Indiana, where a prayer service will be held on Tuesday at 11 A.M. with Father Terry Hercik celebrant. Interment will be made in the St. Bernard Cemetery.
