James S. M. Crooks' Obituary

James Simon Monroe Crooks, age 84, of Home, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 4, 2010 at the Indiana Regional Medical Center. He was born in 1926 in Smicksburg, to Jesse M. and Erma E. Eakman Crooks. Jim was a member of the Old Mahoning Baptist Church. A veteran of WW II, he served in the US Army as an Aviation Cadet. He was self-employed as a carpenter and contractor, and also as a lumberman and sawmill operator. In his retirement he began making 50 tops a week to give away, and has sent tops all over the world. Jim had a real love of music and is well known for his fiddle and guitar playing in bluegrass circles and gospel bands. He also enjoyed storytelling, hunting, and trapping, even though he became opposed to trapping in his later years. He enjoyed hearing people laugh and his friendship was valued by many. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. James is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dolly J. Cornman Crooks, Home; two daughters and one son, Gail Patterson and husband Andrew, Home; Allen Crooks and wife Bonnie, Home; Susan Crooks, Home; five grandchildren, Mark Patterson and wife Maria; Eric Patterson and wife Shelly; Joshua Patterson and wife Desiree; Erin Barthel and husband Casey; Robert Crooks and wife Jody; nine great grandchildren, Andrew, Autumn, Evan, Logan, Mackenzie, Mason, Miles, Morgan, and Susan; two sisters, Dorothy Graves and husband John, Albion; Joan Griffith and husband Clifford, Smicksburg; his brother-in-law Eugene Cornman, Home; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Hazel Cornman, and one brother-in-law Clifford Steiner Friends will be received on Saturday from 12 noon to 4 P.M. at the Old Mahoning Baptist Church, 5225 Mahoning Rd., Home, PA 15747, where a funeral service will be held Sunday at 2 P.M. with Pastor Micah McMillen officiating. Interment will be made in the church cemetery with the Armstrong Co. Veterans providing military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the Child Evangelism Fellowship, (CEF), PO Box 403, Indiana, PA 15701.
