Helen Dale Cooke Cunningham's Obituary

Helen Dale Cooke Cunningham, age 75, of Indiana, died on Sunday, December 28, 2014, at St. Andrew's Village, Indiana. She was born in 1939 in Kittanning to Charles Wallace and Martha Jane Bowser Cooke. She was a past board member of the Visiting Nurses' Association of Indiana, a charter Member of the IUP chapter of Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society and a past mother advisor of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls, Indiana Assembly #111. Helen was also a member of the Graystone Presbyterian Church, Indiana. She was a professor of nursing at IUP for 28 years, a graduate of the Allegheny Valley Hospital School of Nursing and the University of Pittsburgh, with Master's Degrees in Nursing and Education. She was responsible for the practical and clinical education of countless nursing students through the years. She maintained lasting relationships with IUP, Indiana Hospital and numerous health, nursing and social service organizations in Western Pennsylvania throughout her accomplished professional career. Her devotion to both teaching and caring for her family, friends, students and colleagues was undeniable. Her wit, charm, grace, loyalty and professionalism were only surpassed by her love of living to the fullest in each moment. Helen is survived by three children - Jane C. Harnagy and husband Robert, Ocean Shores, WA; Sarah N. Cunningham, Mars; Thomas P. Cunningham, Jr., Indiana; four grandchildren - Olivia, Reagan, Isabel, and Callie; two nieces and three nephews; and countless friends and students. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Thomas P. Cunningham on December 8, 2009, and her two sisters - Carol Jean Bussard and Florence Irene Barnes. Family and friends will be received on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. at Bowser-Minich Funeral Home, Indiana, where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11 A.M. with the Rev. Richard Hurley officiating. Interment will be made in the Oakland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Zeta Lambda Chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Johnson Hall Rm 210, 1010 Oakland Ave., Indiana, Pa 15705.
