Harold S. Smith's Obituary

Harold S. Smith, age 89, of Indiana, died Tuesday, March 15, 2011at the Indiana Regional Medical Center. He was born in 1921 in Kittanning, to Howard and Elizabeth (Hawk) Smith. Mr. Smith was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, and was secretary of the Men's Fellowship for a number of years. He was also a lifetime member of the VFW Post #1989, a charter member of the NARFE Chapter #2124, the UCT Council #598, and the TPA, Johnstown. He graduated from Kittanning High School, class of 1939. In June of 1940 he enlisted in the US Navy for six years. He served in on the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, CV-5. The Yorktown was engaged in the Battle of North Atlantic in 1941, and four naval battles early in 1942. In the last battle, "Midway," the Yorktown was sunk on June 4, 1942. He also served in the Korean War in the US Army. After discharge from the service he was employed at the Veterans Hospital, Butler in the Office Services Section. In October 1960 he was transferred to the US Public Health Service as an office services manager in Fort Worth, TX. In 1980 he moved to Indiana. Harold is survived by one son, Gregory S. Michaels and wife Lisa, Kent, WA; two grandsons, Grant and Gavin Michaels, Kent, WA; his sister-in-law Naomi P. Smith, Kittanning; his niece Phyllis Zolocsik and husband John, Dayton; and other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, by his first wife Paula McCleskey Smith in 1980, by his second wife Carol Lee Clegg Smith in 2009, by his son Jeffrey Lynn in 1979, and by three brothers James Dallas, William J., and Raymond L. Smith, by one sister Margaret "Maggie" Reith. Friends will be received on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. at the Bowser-Minich Funeral Home, Indiana, where a funeral service will begin promptly at 11 A.M. with the Rev. Brad Lauster officiating. Private interment will be made in the Rupp Lutheran Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
