Glenn C. Brant's Obituary

Glenn C. Brant, (93), of Indiana, passed peacefully into eternal life on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at the Communities for Indian Haven. He was born in 1921 in Cumberland, Maryland to the late Mahlon Shaffer Brant and Anna Matilda (Hittie) Brant. He graduated from Berlin Brothers High School and attended the University of Maryland, until World War II started. He enlisted in the Air Force and served in the Pacific theater, Administrative Division from 1942 to 1946. He was a member of the Air Force reserve for 18 years. After the war ended, he worked for the Veterans Administration, Johnstown, Pa, as Director of Personnel. He held that position until moving to Indiana in 1959. He was associated with Brody Brothers Department stores for over 20 years, where he was Director of Personnel and women's wear buyer. Glenn was a member of the First Baptist Church in Indiana, Pa. for the last 15 years. He served on numerous committees and was a member of church council. Prior to joining the Baptist Church, he was a 40 year member of Zion Lutheran Church, Indiana, Pa where he served the church as President of Church Council and worked on numerous committees and programs. He was President of the Downtown Merchants' Association, 10 year member of the Indiana County Development Board, former Boy Scout Master, active in the Caring Foundation, the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, the Blind Association, and others. He was active in fundraising for the United Way for many years. He was a 32nd degree Mason-Shriner belonging to the Jaffa Shrine, Altoona, Pa., however, he was most proud of his association with the Indiana Lions Club, where he was a 55 year member. He held all offices in the club, served as both Zone and Regional Chairman for many years, and served two terms as District Governor of 14-J, 1970-71; 1972-73, where he was responsible for chartering three clubs, Marion Center, Blairsville, and Johnstown West End. He proposed the first statewide White Cane Program, for the blind; initiated the Grinny Barclay Scholarship program in 1964, which provides 4 students from IUP with scholarships each year, served on the Beacon Lodge for the blind board, where a building was named for him; served on the International Elections Committee, started the used Eyeglass Program for the Indiana area and numerous other Lions projects. He saw many orphaned and needy children during his service in Burma and China and vowed to help children, when the war ended. Through the Lions Club, he was able to do that. He first worked with the Underprivileged Camp, which the Lions operated from 1961-1967, where a camping experience was provided to needy Indiana County children for several weeks each summer. Camp Orenda for the mentally and physically handicapped children and adults came into existence in 1968. He was a 100% member for over 50 years, serving as its Executive Director for the last 18 years. He had full responsibility for operating the camp. When the Indiana Lions Club no longer had the capability of totaling funding the camp operation, he was instrumental in making it a district 14-J project, sought 501(c3) status, initiated United Way funding, and started the Children's Show, which over the years, has helped the camp remain operational. He received numerous Lion's Awards, including, two 100% District Governor, diamond awards, one international Presidential Medal, numerous Presidential Certificates, as well as, district awards. He was named Lion of the Year and a Melvin Jones Fellow. He received the Proud Lion Award, PA Foundation Award, PA Counselors Medal, and was a Life Member of the PA Council of Lions Clubs and the Indiana Lions Club. He received the International Presidents Award for outstanding service to Lions Club International in 2007 from International President Jimmy Ross. He was named Indiana County Male Civic Leader of the Year in 2005, and was named to the 1st Annual Senior Hall of Fame in May 2013. He is survived by a daughter Susan Brant (Robin Hastings), Indiana, PA, a son Dr. Gregory C. Brant (Nancy), Chagrin Falls, OH and a special grandson, who was like a son to him, Stephen Solo (Kimberly), Ligonier, PA and great-granddaughter, Scarlett Solo. Other grandchildren include, Garrick and Danielle Brant, Ohio, and his faithful dog, Luci Lu. He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Samuel, his parents, and his wife Barbara. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Bowser-Minich funeral home, Indiana. The Lions Club will hold a service at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Additional visitation will be held on Monday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the Bible Baptist Church, 232 Rte 217, Latrobe, PA 15650, where a funeral service will begin at 10:00 AM with Pastor Matthew Schwender officiating. Burial will be at the Berlin IOOF Cemetery, Berlin, PA at 1:00 PM where Military Honors will be performed by the Somerset County Honor Guard. The family would like to thank the staff of both Crystal Waters Personal Care Home and the Communities of Indian Haven for the excellent care they provided to our father.
