Obituary

Emma L. (Shafer) Hay, 99, Indiana, PA went home to live with her Lord on Monday, June 24, 2013. She was born on August 24, 1913 in Moon Twp., PA, and the only daughter of Henry A. and Margaret E. (Barnes) Shafer. Mrs. Hay graduated an honor student from Coraopolis High School, Coraopolis, PA. She received her B.S. Degree in Latin, English and Social Studies from Indiana University of PA, an M. Ed. Degree in Counseling and certification in Special Studies in Journalism from the Pennsylvania State University. She taught Latin and English in Moon Twp. High School, Stoystown High School, Rockwood High School and Latin and English-Journalism to Academic Jr. and Sr. students in Somerset High School. She also taught evening courses in English and Speech for the Pennsylvania State University. When she retired from teaching in 1976 after 34 years of service, she was serving as the guidance counselor to the ninth and tenth grade students of Somerset Area Schools. Survived by daughter Emma Lou Shaffor and husband Norman, Indiana, PA, and granddaughters Deborah A. Walker and husband Christopher, Conover, OH; Elizabeth K. McCloud and husband Jeffrey and great grandsons Nathaniel and Maxwell McCloud of Elizabethtown, PA. Emma was preceded in death by her parents, late husband George E. Hay, and brothers: Theodore A., William A., Arthur A., Howard A., Henry B., Harvey J., Clyde W., and Gale P. Shafer. She had such a close relationship with her students that they continued to remember her on holidays with cards and visited her yearly. Through the years she was very active in St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Somerset, PA where she was secretary for the Deacon Board, served on the Music and Worship Committee, and baked pecan pies for the annual spring and fall luncheons. In recent years she also was a member of Graystone Presbyterian Church, Indiana, PA. She assisted Mrs. Betty Haupt in writing histories for the Somerset Historical Society and also wrote a history of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church dating from 1977 to 1999. In August, 1987, her name appeared in Life Magazine where Betsy Stuart, a former student and wife of Ollie North, wrote many nice comments about her. She had a road in Moon Twp., PA named for her-Emma Lane. A former journalism student is writing a book about growing up in Somerset and dedicating it to her. A lover of politics, she has never missed a vote and during Tom Ridge's term as Governor of PA, she was inducted into the PA Voter Hall of Fame. Friends will be received at the Bowser/Minich Funeral Home, Indiana, PA on Monday, July 1, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Friends will also be received at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Somerset, PA on Tuesday, July 2, from 11 A.M. until 1 P.M. The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. with the Reverend Keith Fink and Reverend William Milligan officiating. Burial will be held in the Casebeer Cemetery in
