Donald F. Stahr's Obituary

Donald F. Stahr, age 80 of Indiana, died peacefully and was reunited with his Lord on Friday, April 10, 2015, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the second child born in 1934 to Robert F. and Mary Catherine Ream Stahr in Johnstown. Don was a member of Our Lady of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, Lucernemines, and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the American Chemical Society, and a member of the Tri-County PIC Council. Mr. Stahr graduated from Johnstown Central Catholic School in 1952. He then attended St. Francis University in Loretto on a full academic scholarship and became the first member of his family to attend and graduate from college. He graduated with a BS in Chemistry in 1956. Following graduation, he spent time as a teaching assistant at Penn State University in the Chemistry Department. Although Don worked at the Bethlehem Steel Plant in Johnstown while attending college, his chemistry career began in 1956 with a position at PPG. While there, he helped to develop several processes the PPG patented and are still in use in the paint industry today. Don joined FM Syntron in Homer City and became plant manager in the Silicon Division of FMC for 20 years. He co-founded and served as president of CKE in 1980. The company employed 40 to 50 people at their plants in Lucernmines and Indiana, and he oversaw the production of rectifiers and spare parts until his retirement in 1999. Since retirement, Don enjoyed a slower-paced life with his devoted wife Catherine and enjoyed spending time with his family. He is loved and adored by his surviving wife Catherine White Stahr, Indiana; four daughters - Laura Stahr, Alexandria, VA; MaryAnn Frieben and husband Rick, Fayetteville, Deborah Schlueter and husband Henry, Southern Shores, NC; Lisa McCarthy and husband James, Shrewsburg, MA; five grandchildren - Dustin Frazier, Alexandria, VA, Nicholas and Emily Frieben, Fayetteville, Caitlain and Colleen McCarthy, Shrewsburg, MA; two brothers and two sisters - Thomas Stahr and wife Marge, Mulberry, FL; Frank Stahr and wife Linda, Robinson; Kathleen Boyd, Alberdine, MD; Patricia McMonagle, Johnstown. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers - James and Robert Stahr, his brothers-in-law - Jerry Boyd and Jack McMonagle. Friends will be received on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. at the Bowser-Minich Funeral Home, Indiana. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 A.M. at Our Lady of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, Lucernemines, with the Rev. Fr. Ronald Cyktor, the celebrant. Interment will be made in the Oakland Cemetery, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to the VNA Hospice, 850 Hospital Rd., Suite 3000, Indiana, PA 15701.
