Obituary

Dr. Carl W. Bordas, 91, of Indiana, passed away Friday, June 10, 2011 at Moorehead House. The son of John C. and Edna Goss Bordas, he was born April 19, 1920 in West Decatur, Clearfield County, PA. A graduate of Philipsburg High School and The Pennsylvania State University, Dr. Bordas participated in the Civilian Conservation Corps and served as a Surgical Technician in World War II. In May of 1945, he and his unit liberated the concentration camp at Ebensee, Austria. In later years Dr. Bordas maintained a correspondence with one of the grateful survivors of the camp. In April 1990, Dr. Bordas was awarded a Liberation Medal in Philadelphia, presented at a Memorial Ceremony for Six Million Jewish Martyrs. Dr. Bordas worked as a chemist for various industries: Bell Aircraft, Carborundum Corp., and Clearfield Cheese Company. But his career passion was education; a field to which he dedicated fifty years. As an educator he first taught Physics and Chemistry at Curwensville High School, and subsequently served as Chemistry Department Chairman for Penn State, DuBois campus, Principal of Northern Potter High School in Ulysses, PA, Chemistry instructor for Penn State Nursing at several campuses, and finally retired as Professor Emeritus at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. While Assistant Chairman of the IUP Chemistry Department, he initiated the Chemistry Newsletter and Annual Awards Day. Dr. Bordas was a 32nd degree Mason and belonged to various Masonic Organizations for over 50 years. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1989, Indiana, PA and the American Legion Post 437, Philipsburg, PA. In addition, he was past president of the Evergreen Chapter 2581 of AARP, member of the American Chemical Society, Phi Delta Kappa, and Retired Faculty Association of IUP. Dr. Bordas was a member of Zion Lutheran Church since coming to Indiana in 1958. He is survived by three daughters: Linda Nance and husband Drew, Pamela Stefanik and husband Ivan, and Rhonda Mulroy and husband John, all of Indiana; three grandchildren: Marla Nance-Phillibert, of Long Island, NY; Diana Nance, of New York, NY; and Alexander Nance, of Chapel Hill, NC; one great-grandchild, Donald Phillibert, III; one brother, Donald W. Bordas of Wallaceton, PA; and one cousin, Clyde Goss, of Harrisburg, PA; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Margaret Brown Bordas, in 2005, as well as six brothers and five sisters. Friends will be received on Sunday from 7 to 9 P.M. at the Bowser-Minich Funeral Home, Indiana, where a funeral service will be held Monday at 12 Noon with the Rev. Julie Walz officiating. Private interment will be made in the Oakland Cemetery. The VFW Post #1989 will provide military honors at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to VNA Hospice or The Indiana County Humane Society.
