Betty Lou
Sloniger
December 17, 1923 – April 12, 2025
Betty Lou Sloniger, 101, of Indiana passed away on April 12, 2025 at the Communities at Indian Haven. The daughter of John B. and Vernie (Lewis) Sloniger, she was born December 17, 1923 in Dayton, PA. Betty graduated from Dayton High School in the early days of World War II. For the next forty-five years she lived in Saltsburg, PA and was employed by Federal Laboratories in Tunnelton, PA. During her tenure there, Betty worked in every department, producing mainly wartime necessities such as shells, bombs and tear gas.
Betty's life was "Well Lived". She was a caregiver for most of her life. In her early years in Dayton, she was in demand as a babysitter which she enjoyed since she loved children. As part of a large family of nine children, she was raised during the Great Depression. She often said, "We didn't have much money, but I was never poor."
Much of her life was spent doing for others who were in need. She freely gave financial assistance, when possible to others. This sharing with others was just who she was.
Betty had always been talented in sports. She loved to compete in sports and performed at a high level of skill. She played softball in the Indiana County League as well as bowling in the Indiana County League. At this level, she experienced much success. She was most proud of being part of an Indiana Women's All Star Softball team that played a championship game at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. Playing golf and playing cards were also favorite pastimes.
Betty will be greatly missed by her surviving sisters-in-law; special nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, Gene, Edward, Carl, Kenneth, and Barry Sloniger, and three sisters, Golda Adair Jamison, Lois Coleman and Margaret Van Horn.
The family would like to thank the people of the Communities at Indian Haven and 365 Hospice for their kindness and excellent care.
Service was held privately for the family at Bowser Minich Funeral Home, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, Betty requested memorial donations made to the American Heart Association, www.heart.org/donate.
