Bertha "Birdi" Margaret Berkey of Indiana died Thursday, January 2, 2020 at her home. She was born in 1941 in Passaic, NJ to John and Julia Shimko Berkey.

She also had an adopted family in NJ; Mom and Pop Lang, brothers and sisters Dawn, Bruce and Shawn, also Craig, Sandy and Jay who have passed away sometime ago. Birdi loved them and they were her family.

She was a cook in NJ for many years at the shore. For the past 30 years she lived in Indiana and worked at Riverside BiLo Bakery, Unimart, Dollar General, Best Western and Rustic Lodge.

Birdi was known for always remembering birthdays with a card and telling stories about her cats. An avid sports fan, everyone knew not to call during a game. She loved all animals and reprimanded many a hunter.

She is survived by her circle of friends who helped so much during her five-year illness, and her companion of 30 years Barb Barrish.

Friends will be received on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bowser-Minich funeral Home, Indiana, where a prayer service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. with interment to follow in the St. Bernard Cemetery.
