Obituary

Arthur W. (Art) Vellesig, age 85, of West Lebanon passed away Sunday June 17, 2012 at the Communities at Indian Haven in Indiana. He was born in 1926 to John R. and Helen (Cecconi) Vellesig in Hart Town, Indiana County. Arthur was a member of the Church of the Good Sheperd, Lifetime member of the Indiana VFW Post 1989, and a former member of the Young Twp Lions Club. He also served on the ICCAP Board of Directors and the West Lebanon Water Authority where he was instrumental in securing a public water system for the community. He was retired from RandP Coal Company serving both as a miner and later as a Supervisor of quality control. Arthur was a Veteran of WWII serving in the United States Navy aboard the USS Pensacola and was involved in securing the landing area in Iwo Jima. He enjoyed hunting, woodworking, tinkering in his garage, and attending IUP basketball and Penn State Football games for many years. He was a devoted father to his handicapped sons and a devoted husband to his wife, especially after her severe stroke. He was a hunting mentor to his nephews and enjoyed teaching them about hunting safety and life lessons. He is survived by his daughter Eleanor (Ellie) Hancock and husband Bob of Somerset; and son Butch Vellesig, West Lebanon. He is also survived by his grandchildren Janine (Mrs. Andrew Dudash), Huntingdon and Eric DiFrancesco and wife Lori of Hooversville. He was also the proud great grandfather of these grandchildren: Silas and Kazmira Dudash, and Olivia and Connor DiFrancesco. Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth in 2009, and son Richard in 1965. He was the last surviving member of the original Vellesig family, being predeceased by a brother John Velesig, sisters Emma Zak, Vera Rupert, Mary Bertolino, Edith Bertolino, Josephine, and Eleanor Jane. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 - 8 pm and Wednesday 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 pm at the Bowser-Minich Funeral Home, Indiana. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, June 21 at 10:00 AM at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Kent. Burial will take place in the St. Bernard Cemetery, Indiana.
